Alhaji Grusah discusses his relationship with Sulley Muntari’s late mother.

Alhaji Grusah, the owner of Kumasi-based football club King Faisal, looks to be the godfather of the majority of Muslim players in Ghana football, and he has relished the role by establishing ties with the bulk of the players who play in both the local league and overseas.

Former Black Stars player Sulley Muntari has a godfather-like bond with Grusah. The relationship stems deep into the player’s family, as Grusah was close friends with Sulley’s late mother, Hajia Kande.

Grusah recalled a pleasant talk he had with Hajia, who was certain that there would be no Black Stars without her son, Sulley Muntari, in an interview with Dan Kwaku Yeboah TV.

“Hajia Kande, she said no Muntari, no Black Stars, but I assured her that even if Muntari dies, we would play football, so she shouldn’t say that,” he explained.

Hajia Kande, who died in 2021, bequeathed two players on Ghana football who have helped the country: Sulley Muntari and Muniru Sulley.

Muntari, the oldest, rose to prominence, playing for top clubs across Europe. He played for AC Milan, Inter Milan, Portsmouth and a host of others.

He was the winner of the UEFA Champions League, Super Cup, FIFA Clubs World Cup, Serie A, English FA Cup, and several more honours.

Muntari was a member of Ghana’s squad that qualified the country for the World Cup for the first time. He left a lasting impression on Ghanaians, scoring 20 goals in 84 appearances throughout a 12-year international career.

Muniru, unlike Muntari, did not reach the pinnacle of the game but did have successful stints in Europe, playing for Steaua Bucharest FC, Yeni Malatyaspor, and a few others.

Muniru is still active and presently plays in Belarus for FC Minsk.
