Earth tremor hits some parts of Accra, Ghana’s capital

Accra, the capital of Ghana, was rocked by two earthquakes on Monday (December 12).

The first tremor was registered shortly after 10 am, while the second tremor was recorded about 11: 30 am, according to accounts in the local media and several Twitter users.

Several villages, including Adabraka, Gbawe, McCarthy Hill, Kwabenya, and Mallam, felt the tremor.

Nicholas Opoku, the Principal Seismologist of the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA), has pleaded with Ghanaians not to panic about the most recent earthquake.

But he added that because Accra is located in an earthquake zone, locals must be ready to occasionally experience such earthquakes.

“What we have been saying all this while is that Accra is situated in the earthquake-prone zones so from time to we will be experiencing these minor earthquakes until such a time that a major will happen,” Mr Opoku said on Citi Prime News on Monday.

It’s not the first time that Accra has felt an earth tremor. Records of the occurrence from 2018 through 2020 are available.

Twitter users in Ghana have been discussing the subject and sharing their personal experiences.
