On Thursday, Ken Ofori-Atta will face the Parliament regarding the Debt Exchange Program.

On February 16, the Domestic Debt Exchange scheme will be addressed in Parliament by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

This comes in response to a request from the Speaker of the House, Alban Bagbin, that the Business Committee of the House call the Finance Minister to give a policy brief on the program in light of the ongoing picketing by pensioner bondholders at the Finance Ministry in support of a program exemption.

In delivering the business statement of Parliament for the upcoming week, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the deputy majority leader, stated that it was imperative for the Minister to appear before Parliament in order to respond to questions from members of the House’s constituents.

Following the picketing of retirees at the Finance Ministry to demand exemption from the exercise, the Minority expressed concerns and demanded policy specifics on the program.

Members of the legislature, according to Speaker of the House Alban Bagbin, are ready to help the government.

“Parliament is always ready to help the government escape this mess. As a result, all I can say at this point is that the parliament has spoken, and that’s that. Since the pensioners are picketing at the Ministry, the business committee needs to organize a meeting with the Minister as soon as possible. This must be completed as soon as feasible. The Minister should appear before the house to brief members on the situation, according to the Business Committee.

Despite fierce opposition, the Domestic Debt Exchange Program’s deadline for individuals and institutions to join up expired on Tuesday.
