John Dumelo wrote to Akufo-Addo, “Ghana is broke; cancel Independence Day celebrations.”

National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for parliament John Dumelo has urged President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to postpone this year’s Independence Day celebrations.

He claimed that the March 6 celebrations, which take place in all of the regional capitals, cannot currently be supported by the Ghanaian economy.

In a post on social media, the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency aspirant wrote: “Greetings @NAkufoAddo, respectfully we are in hard times, can you please cancel all state, regional and district Independence Day celebrations? You can do your usual ‘fellow Ghanaians’ broadcast on tv. This will save us millions of cedis. Thanks so much”.

The 66th anniversary of Ghana’s independence will be celebrated commencing on Monday, March 6, 2023.

The celebration, with the slogan “Our Unity, Our Strength, Our Mission,” would be attended by tens of thousands of people from all across the nation and the globe.

The major celebration will take place in Ho, the capital of the Volta Region, as part of the national and regional events planned for the day.
