Overview/Background
The Upper East Peace and Entertainment Awards (UEPEA) 2021 was successfully launched on Saturday April 3, 2021 at Tap Hotel, Bolgatanga. This award scheme seeks to honor and celebrate personalities and institutions who have contributed remarkably to the development of peace, justice, security, democracy and economy of their respective locality that helped in the total peace and development of mother Ghana.
This award scheme had been constituted by the Upper East Youth For Peace (UEYP) to formally recognize and appreciate the various humanitarian and peace building works being engaged by the good people of Upper East Region especially among individuals, corporate institutions, agencies, NGO’s, CSO’s and other leading companies that have contributed directly in the engagements of Corporate Social Responsibilities as part of its fulfilment towards the peace building of our nation.
The Upper East Youth for Peace is a Ghanaian-based peace building organization led by young visionary people. It is also a peace building organization that aims at preventing violent conflict through mediation, justice, youth development, anti-corruption campaign and capacity building.
This award scheme constituted will be entirely different from many other awards scheme’s organized in the region. In that the UEPEA 21 awards focus more on philanthropy involvements among every Ghanaian, NGO’s, companies (Public and Private), Ministry Department and Agencies among many others, also the various categories within the nomination cuts across various sectors of the economy with active participation from the general public, evaluation and assessment from the UEPEA21 awarding board.
Through the many stages of conflict, Upper East Youth for Peace is looking for ways to transform its violent and destructive manifestations into more of social change. In the great silencing inequality of structural violence and oppression, we are also looking for ways to elevate the violence of those who have never had a chance to speak or their communities. Also among groups who have been torn apart from one another by mistrust, anger, and fear, we will look for ways to bridge deep chasms and repair wounded identities.
Honoring awards and entertainment will provide a unique approach to peace building, which will have the potential to help communities participate and address the many stages of conflict in a more constructive and creative way. Of course, peace and entertainment award does not in itself end wars, eliminate structural inequalities, or heal deep psychological wounds. What it does, though, is to engage us in a thought process. Former African President and champion of social inequality and nonviolence Nelson Mandela attests, “Artists reach areas far beyond the reach of politicians. Art especially entertainment and music is understood by everybody, and it lifts the spirits and the morale of those who hear it”. Entertainment is a spark that ignites a cycle, at times of social change, at times of interconnection, at times of healing. Entertainment allows us to access a deeper emotional context that we otherwise may never approach.
The project is dubbed “UPPER EAST PEACE AND ENTERTAINMENT AWARDS 2021”. The Upper East Peace and Entertainment Awards 2021 will aim at building a culture of peace and unity that counters all forms of violence and hate, including violent extremism. It will also solve social issues, such as poverty, which contributes to violent groups’ recruitment and narrative in Upper East and its environs.
This award scheme will provide a creative nonviolent avenue for inspiring social consciousness and affecting change. Just as entertainment has given many groups the courage and the means to expose injustices and advocate for their rights, it has also provided a bridge between dissenting groups.
Entertainment rather than language will provide a better medium for interrogating the character of conflict and for evaluating the equality of conflict resolution. In its endlessly diverse forms, its fluid adaptation over time and context, and its uncanny ability to get under our skin, entertainment is a powerful global and local force.
Entertainment has power over us as we participate, listen to the melody and lyrics, and at the same time gives us power in creating and performing it. Entertainment is a multi-faceted art. It will unite us with ourselves, with others, with the natural world, and with spiritual powers.
The main objectives of this project are:
➢ To promote the presence and the role of young people as positive actors of change in peace-building process;
➢ To strengthen the role of young people in identifying and speaking up against human rights violations, including discrimination, hate speech and those human rights violations affecting especially young people and children;
➢ To support the field presence and activities of the Upper East Region by fostering cooperation with key stakeholders, partners, non-governmental organizations working in the field of peace-building in order to promote the values of the traditional council of Upper East Region;
➢ To develop the impact and the expertise of the Upper East Region youth sector in conflict-affected areas through non-formal education activities with young people;
➢ To develop the competences of youth ambassadors in human rights promotion and protection, conflict transformation, peace-building and intellectual dialogue, as well as other specific competences according to the participants’ needs, related to their role as future ambassadors;
➢ To support and give visibility to at least fifteen (15) local youth-led projects for peace-building in conflict affected areas and communities;
➢ To enhance the youth ambassadors capacity to take action at a local level in environments affected by previous or ongoing conflicts;
➢ To advance youth policy’s role in peace-building and conflict transformation;
➢ To create and support Regional network of youth peace ambassadors to secure the sustainability and medium-term impact of the project.
NETWORK MEMBERS OF UPPER EAST PEACE AND ENTERTAINMENT AWRADS 2021
UPPER EAST YOUTH FOR PEACE is group of young men and women who have come together to promote the presence and the role of young people as positive actors of change in peace-building process. This group is located in the Upper East Region, and occasionally partner with other organizations to host events, talk shows, etc. for development.
The Upper East Youth for Peace uses the widespread of music and entertainment to both listeners and musicians to make an invaluable tool in the process of social change.
Deprived Children and Rural Women Empowerment (DeCRWE Project) is a non-governmental organization that wishes to address the root causes of poverty by supporting long term solutions that assist individuals and families to move out of poverty, assist those with limited capacity, such as low income, underrepresented and vulnerable populations to live with dignity in the Upper East Region.
Gonylive is a digital platform for voting, E-Ticketing, Advertising and Donations. It runs on USSD, App and Websites so it can be access anywhere in the world.

Read-A-Book Foundation is a Non-Governmental Organization responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children in the Upper East Region. The organization is among the most widespread and recognizable in the region, with presence in 8 districts and municipalities in the region.
Foot for street is a non-profit organization supporting children and communities in Ghana. Children are our future; let’s change the world one child at a time.
CURRENT CHALLENGES:
1. No enough support and sponsorship;
2. Votes target cannot be achieved due to bad network and difficulties in voting;
3. No response from the corporate institutions and companies we presented proposals for support;
4. Most of the youth in the region are not well abreast with the concept of this award scheme and poor patronage from the general public.
OUR EXPECTIONS:
1. A sponsor to champion the awards event by taken the overall responsibility for its success.;
2. A sponsor capable of authorizing resources for the awards event;
3. Response and support from the various corporate institutions and companies; and
4. Support from philanthropist, NGO’s and companies.
CONCLUSION
The Upper East Peace and Entertainment Awards 2021 will have a huge potential to promote the presence and role of young people as positive actors of change in peace-building process, will also reshape the role and benefits of the entertainment and music careers in the Upper East Region.
We are not in the same boat; we are in the same storm. Some have yachts, some have canoes and some are drowning. Just be kind and help when you can.
