We take a look back at Ghana’s history as it commemorates its 65th anniversary of independence.

Every year on March 6, Ghanaians commemorate the country’s independence. It is a national holiday in Ghana, and it is also extensively observed by Ghanaians residing overseas. If March 6 falls on a Sunday, it will also be a holiday the following Monday.

HISTORY OF GHANA INDEPENDENCE DAY

Ghana was home to several local strong tribes one of them was the Ashanti tribe in the region before Europeans arrived. Many diverse ancient Ghanaian tribes settled in locations where natural riches, such as gold and ivory, were plentiful. These valuable commodities attracted colonists and enticed them to come to Ghana’s beaches. While the Portuguese were the first to settle in the area, the appeal of the region’s wealth sparked a battle for domination among numerous European nations. Ghana was dubbed the British Gold Coast after Britain acquired control of parts of the country in 1874.

Britain decided to diminish its colonies and the power they held around the world, particularly those in Africa, after being weakened by World War II. A growing cry for independence on the Gold Coast fueled this desire. Following the Gold Coast parliamentary elections in 1947, the United Gold Coast Convention (U.G.C.C.), a local political party created by J. B. Danquah, advocated for “self-government in the shortest feasible time.”

Osagyefo Kwame Nkrumah, the former Secretary-General of the United Nations General Assembly and founder of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), gained a majority in the Gold Coast legislative election in 1951. In 1952, he was named the leader of the Gold Coast administration, and on March 6, 1957, the colony declared independence from the United Kingdom. The new country was named the Nation of Ghana once they gained independence. Nkrumah later became Ghana’s first Prime Minister, and the country became the first in Sub-Saharan African country to gain independence from colonial powers.
