Legendary Ghanaian waakye seller Auntie Muni passes away aged 72

The beloved waakye vendor, Auntie Imoro Muniratu, also called Auntie Muni, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) in Accra. Her 72-year-old mother passed away after a brief illness, according to the family. In an interview, Auntie Muni’s son, Alhassan Abdul Arafat, stated that his mother had been ill and had first been admitted to the SSNIT Hospital; however, after complications developed, Auntie Muni asked to be released.

“After two days, we realised she was still not feeling well, so we rushed her to the University of Ghana Medical Centre for medical attention, and this morning at 3 am, she passed away,” Arafat said.

He stated that when the Cantonment mosque offers prayers in her honor, the remains will be taken to Tamale for her last resting place.

Abdul Arafat said, “It is when the elders sit after the burial that we will decide when the funeral will be held.”

Many people are in sadness following the demise of Auntie Muni, a well-liked character in the culinary world.

In addition to its delicious taste, Auntie Muni’s waakye stand was a beloved destination for tourists as well as locals due to the cozy and inviting ambiance she had personally crafted.

Tributes to Auntie Muni are flooding in as word gets out, showcasing her influence on the neighborhood. In honor of her memory and legacy, the family has revealed that the funeral and burial will take place in Tamale.
