Widely recognized media figure Kafui Dey has shared advice on how to interview dancehall musician Shatta Wale.

This is in response to his recent praise for one of the best interviews the contentious artist has ever done.

Positive comments about Kafui Dey and Shatta Wale’s engaging, educational, and entertaining interview went viral on social media.

He was applauded for his perceptive line of inquiry, which focused on matters of respect and relevant concerns regarding the SM boss’s trade, among other things.

Recall that Shatta praised the presenter on Facebook after adding his voice to the chorus of admirers.

He indicated his preparedness for a “part II” of their conversation, bolstering the success of their initial exchange.

While basking in the praise and admiration, Kafui Dey resorted to social media to provide Shaatta Wale with interview advice.

Read his guidelines below, shared on Twitter below:

How to Interview Shatta Wale – Part 1

Before the Interview

In actuality, the interview started before we went live. I ran upon Ghanaian artist Shata Wale and his crew outside Ghana Television’s makeup department. Together, we entered the studio and struck up a conversation. I asked him, “What do you want people to know at the end of this interview?” as soon as he sat down. I wasn’t prepared for Shatta’s answer. “That I’m merely an actual person.” I told myself, “Let’s go!”

What to Remember

Conduct a guest interview “warmly.” When you are live on the air, you shouldn’t say anything to an interviewee right away. I left the studio with my cup of koko (porridge) and arranged myself so that I would meet Shatta and his crew and spoke for a few minutes before the interview started when I heard that they were almost at GTV.

It’s crucial to maintain a friendly and easygoing atmosphere prior to the cameras rolling since most interviewees are uncertain about the outcome of their interview.

Don’t assume anything about the interview’s purpose. My show director had informed me during my briefing that the performer was coming to support his latest record. I did, however, nonetheless ask Shatta what he hoped to learn from the conversation.

To my joyful surprise, he hinted that the conversation would include topics other than his music. That meant I had a lot more ground to cover as an interviewer.

You can tell what the outcome will be by simply asking, “What do you want to get out of this interview?” Note: I didn’t even let Shatta know what topics I would be discussing or show him my questions. I asked him what he thought would happen in the end.

When guests have asked me to “don’t talk about this or that,” I have had to abide by their requests. Not so contentious and controversial guests have also abruptly ended interviews and left because the show had taken an unapproved turn.

I am aware of the more effective and productive path. Every person who takes a seat in the guest chair during an interview has goals in mind. Just find out what they hope to gain from the conversation, then center your inquiries around that goal.

The Introduction

How you start an interview is very important. It lays the foundation for the conversation that will ensue. This is how I began my chat with Shatta:

Me: You’re watching GTV Breakfast. My guest is…Shatta Wale. Good morning.

Shatta: Good morning.

Me: How be things?

That’s it. In 6 seconds, I had identified the station, introduced my guest, greeted him, and asked him my first question. Why did I do it so quickly?
There are 3 good reasons to keep introductions short, whether the guest is controversial or not.

What to Remember

You need to keep your audience interested in the interview. These days people are time-starved with multiple things competing for their precious attention. A long introduction may make a viewer or listener tune off to do something else. You don’t want that to happen to you.

I could have recited a long list of Shatta Wale’s achievements as part of my introduction. I didn’t. It’s repetitive to introduce a guest by listing all their credentials right at the beginning and then asking about those same credentials within the interview. Don’t be boring. Get straight to the point.

With 1 mouth and 2 ears, we all should talk less and listen more, especially interviewers. Corporate trainer and author Brian Tracy says you can’t learn when you are talking. I agree with him.

Speaking less is beneficial to an interviewer because it gives the host more time to hear and learn from the person who has come on the show to talk. Makes sense doesn’t it?
