It has been discovered that in 2022, teenagers committed roughly 21 abortions, with the Ashanti Region leading the way, followed by the Eastern Region.

The alarming development was revealed as a result of information supplied by the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

The records show that there were 7,618 documented abortions among teenage females in 2022, or roughly 21 abortions per day.

The GHS said that the figure for last year was down 10% from the 8,465 projection for 2021.

A total of 24,108 teenage female abortions were reported between the years 2020, 2021, and 2022. The average over the three years was 8,036 teenage abortions, or 22 abortions per day and roughly one abortion every hour.

At a total of 1,275, the Ashanti Region, which seems to have garnered notoriety for recording high abortion cases, again had the highest rate of teenage abortions in 2022.

In the years 2020 and 2021, the region saw 1,407 and 1,531 teenage abortions, respectively.

The Ahafo Region had the fewest teenage abortions in 2022, with a total of just 171 abortions, the report reveals. It is followed by the Eastern Region, which recorded 1,106 abortion occurrences.

No surprise a model of estimations for pregnancies and abortions produced in the first quarter of 2022 showed that around 266,000 abortions were performed in Ghana within four years.
